Celebrate with Us National Nurses Week!

A Leadership Perspective and Personal Thank You

Reflections by: Lisa A. Thomson, BA, LNHA, HSE, FACHCA, CIMT – Chief Operating Officer, Pathway Health
As we celebrate National Nurses Week, May 6–12, 2026, I want to take a moment to recognize and thank the nurses who are truly the heart of healthcare. This week, culminating on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, also recognized as International Nurses Day, honors the extraordinary contributions nurses make to healthcare and society.
The 2026 theme, “The Power of Nurses™,” resonates deeply with me—not only as a leader, but as someone who has the privilege of working alongside nurses every day. In post-acute care especially, nurses are not only clinical leaders in one of the largest sectors of healthcare—they are coaches, mentors, advocates, and often “family” to the residents they serve.
From my perspective as an operational leader, I rely on nurses every single day. We work together—side by side—aligning clinical, regulatory, and operational priorities to achieve meaningful outcomes. This is not separate work; it is shared work. It is interdisciplinary collaboration at its best.
Nurses serve as the hub of the interdisciplinary team—connecting therapy, physicians, social services, and operations to ensure cohesive, resident-centered care. Their ability to bring teams together and translate clinical insight into coordinated action is what drives consistency, quality, and outcomes across our organizations.
The power of nurses is evident in everything you do:
- P – Presence: Showing up in the moments that matter most
- O – Ownership: Driving quality, compliance, and outcomes with accountability
- W – Wisdom: Applying clinical judgment and critical thinking in complex environments
- E – Empathy: Building meaningful connections with residents and families
- R – Resilience: Leading through change with strength, adaptability, and purpose
What makes this impact even more powerful is how it translates into outcomes. Strong nursing leadership directly influences documentation accuracy, quality measure performance, survey readiness, and ultimately reimbursement integrity. When nurses are supported, aligned, and empowered, organizations see stronger interdisciplinary collaboration, reduced risk, and more consistent, high-quality care delivery. This is where clinical excellence and operational success intersect.
What makes this impact even more meaningful is how it extends beyond today’s care delivery and into the future of our profession. The future of our profession depends on experienced nurses mentoring and developing the next generation—something I have the privilege of seeing every day across our teams. Whether guiding new staff, supporting colleagues, or modeling clinical excellence, nurses play a critical role in building a stronger, more resilient workforce.
You are not only the clinical backbone of our organizations—you are essential partners in every success we achieve. The consistency, accountability, and compassion you bring each day elevate not only the care we deliver, but the people and teams around you.
On a personal note, I am continually inspired by your dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence. To all nurses across the country—and especially to our Pathway clinical team members—thank you for the difference you make every day.
We are stronger because of you, and I am grateful to work alongside you.
Happy Nurses Week!
