National Influenza Vaccination Week 2022: IPC Resources + Support

National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is December 5-9, reminding us all that there’s still time to get vaccinated against Flu.
People older than age 65 are at the highest risk for hospitalization and complications from influenza and account for the majority of influenza hospitalizations and deaths in the United States each year.
The current influenza stats:
  • Influenza activity remains high to very high across most of the U.S.
  • Of influenza A viruses detected and sub-typed this season, 79% have been influenza A(H3N2) and 21% have been influenza A(H1N1).
  • CDC estimates that, so far this season, there have been at least 8.7 million illnesses, 78,000 hospitalizations, and 4,500 deaths from flu.

Regulatory Corner: Updated RoP Phase 3

Requirements of Participation (RoP) Phase 3 that became effective on October 24, 2022 includes robust requirements related to skilled nursing facility (SNF) infection prevention and control programs and Infection Preventionists (IPs) role, such as:

  • IPs must be employed at least part-time and on-site
  • Evidence of specialized infection control training must be provided
  • IPs must actively participate in each SNF’s Quality Assessment and Assurance (QAA) committee.
